Artist Statement:

Working primarily with oil paints, my interest is in depicting the human figure and exploring the creation of images which attempt to capture both physical appearance and the rather more intangible emotional and psychological spaces.  I attempt to create images which encompass the internal as well as the external.
I am currently loosely exploring contemporary life in Seychelles, with one body of work revolving around portraits of the youth, and another which explores everyday scenes of people in transit – on the move, waiting, or pausing to interact with someone. This seems to be much of what occupies my life at present!
I was drawn to create portraits of young adults, often students, where I contemplate matters such as their potential, their search for their identity and the future which lies ahead. I sense uncertainty, impassiveness and detachment, feelings of ennui and tedium, pride and confidence. They are challenging, blasé, or bored.
I collect, make and find things and look at them all together. I enjoy the relationships between things and the connections they form with each other, the way one thing leads to another. I often work in multiples and generate an accumulation of pieces in a variety of media. Repetitively working from a source image allows me to form a relationship with it, to spend time with it and familiarise myself with it. I explore it in different ways, and I value the way the outcomes are always different despite starting out with exactly the same intention and equipment. It depends on the time of day, mood, passing thoughts and surroundings. I enjoy these sensitivities. I see these pieces as familiarisation exercises, like the various interactions which take place during the process of getting to know someone.

Seychelloise Artist - Frances Chang Him.

FRANCES CHANG-HIM I would like the viewer to experience a sense of gratitude towards the amazing beauty of the environment that surrounds us Frances’ subject of choice is tropical islands, beach and forest scenes, she creates painstakingly accurate renditions of lush locations around the Seychelles Islands. My core concern is definitely the reflection of nature and the manner in which nature enriches humanity. FAIRYLAND 2004 Acrylic on paper 50x40cm Frances is also concerned with the protection of the Seychellois Heritage and often portrays cultural elements in her paintings; you will often find women in traditional Creole dress and  figures performing activities unique to the Seychelles way of life. I think we are losing a lot of our traditional activities because of our modern way of living. Thus I would like to keep them ‘alive’ through my paintings. The BIG DRAW 2020 - Seychelles

For the past 4 years   Arterial Network Seychelles   have participated in the international   Big Draw   event, to promote drawing under a new theme each year  - this year the theme is “A Climate of Change”. Who really knows how the changing climate and all that goes with it is affecting our young people, they hear all negativity about it on the news and feel its effects in their daily lives but do they really understand it? And how does all the uncertainty make them feel? Are they afraid?  The mission of our  Big Draw  project was to get the children of Seychelles thinking – to get them researching and educating themselves about this “Climate of Change” we are currently living in. The theme encompasses all the changes in every way that the world is currently experiencing and we decided to focus on environmental climate change- a topic which is particularly poignant for our small island nation.   We had Five schools participating this ...
