The BIG DRAW 2020 - Seychelles

For the past 4 years   Arterial Network Seychelles   have participated in the international   Big Draw   event, to promote drawing under a new theme each year  - this year the theme is “A Climate of Change”. Who really knows how the changing climate and all that goes with it is affecting our young people, they hear all negativity about it on the news and feel its effects in their daily lives but do they really understand it? And how does all the uncertainty make them feel? Are they afraid?  The mission of our  Big Draw  project was to get the children of Seychelles thinking – to get them researching and educating themselves about this “Climate of Change” we are currently living in. The theme encompasses all the changes in every way that the world is currently experiencing and we decided to focus on environmental climate change- a topic which is particularly poignant for our small island nation.   We had Five schools participating this ...

Seychelloise Artist - Frances Chang Him.

FRANCES CHANG-HIM I would like the viewer to experience a sense of gratitude towards the amazing beauty of the environment that surrounds us Frances’ subject of choice is tropical islands, beach and forest scenes, she creates painstakingly accurate renditions of lush locations around the Seychelles Islands. My core concern is definitely the reflection of nature and the manner in which nature enriches humanity. FAIRYLAND 2004 Acrylic on paper 50x40cm Frances is also concerned with the protection of the Seychellois Heritage and often portrays cultural elements in her paintings; you will often find women in traditional Creole dress and  figures performing activities unique to the Seychelles way of life. I think we are losing a lot of our traditional activities because of our modern way of living. Thus I would like to keep them ‘alive’ through my paintings. DAYDREAMING 100X80cm 2015 acrylic on canvas. Aside from landscape and scenic vistas Fran...

Seychellois Artist - Daniel Dodin

DANIEL DODIN ARTIST'S STATEMENT   The new series of work that I have created expresses aspects of my everyday life in visual narrative forms. In many of my works I depict the ordinary struggles of local youngsters, many of whom are facing addiction problems whilst dealing with social discrimination. Some of this series reflects the plight of displaced refugees – sadly a common and worldwide concern. Elsewhere I have included and revealed a number of Indian characters due to my familiarity with Indian society. I feel that Indian people number amongst the key activists in the history of the Seychelles – they have always had a major role to play here. Within a local context I find the relatively recent phenomenon of the bottle collectors fascinating. These young men have unique characters; they spend their days making long journeys carrying big bags on their heads which are filled with empty plastic bottles (which they sell). Looking at these characters a sense o...

Seychellois Artist - Zoe Chong Seng

Beautifully captured small slices of life from the 'Mouvman Lavi' Exhibition - by Zoe Chong Seng. Zoe Chong Seng Visual Artist, Teaching at the Seychelles Institute of Art and Design Born: Seychelles, 1987 Studied: BA (Honours) (Art and Design) from Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia Artist Statement: Working primarily with oil paints, my interest is in depicting the human figure and exploring the creation of images which attempt to capture both physical appearance and the rather more intangible emotional and psychological spaces.  I attempt to create images which encompass the internal as well as the external. I am currently loosely exploring contemporary life in Seychelles, with one body of work revolving around portraits of the youth, and another which explores everyday scenes of people in transit – on the move, waiting, or pausing to interact with someone. This seems to be much of what occupies my life at present! I was drawn to create ...
