ARTERIAL NETWORK RECEIVES FUNDING FROM THE NATIONAL GRANTS COMMITTEE

Signing the Agreement
Members will be pleased to know that we signed a standard funding agreement on Friday February 8th which will enable us to begin a mentoring scheme for young Seychellois artists designed to 'empower young artists for self-development, cultural development and contributing to the development of the economy.'
The agreement, which is between the Government of Seychelles, the National Grants Committee and Arterial Network, will see SR179,500 provided in four stages.
PS Michel Pierre, Mrs Eline Moses -Chairperson of the National Grants Committee and Ans Chairman -Martin Kennedy seal the deal!
We made a bid for government support late last year and applied for a much larger sum in fact. Our project, named THE FUTURE, was intended to provide studio spaces and quality art materials to the art community, with an emphasis on young artists, as well as provide mentoring. The fact that we received money for the last aspect does not mean that the other parts of the project will never happen. We see this support as a valuable first step and hope to secure the funding for the other project components in the future.

What this means, Arterial Network will be able to create useful links between established artists and artists who are just beginning their careers. Many talented young artists become despondent upon leaving college or school and end up taking jobs which offer no opportunity for creative work or development as an artist. Our scheme is designed to support and help young artists realise their potential within the creative industries.
When we put our project together we had visual artists in mind but Arterial is an Arts organisation. We can therefore consider young musicians, writers and dancers alongside image makers (still and moving).

How will it work?

The first thing we have to do is to identify the group of young artists who will benefit from the project.

This will be done in these ways:
  1. Through an 'open call' in the media – print, radio etc.
  2. Through recommendation from people currently working within the arts industries
  3. Through all other communication channels at our disposal – social networking, gallery exposure etc.
Once we have our identified artists we will match them with established artists. The connections will be made on the basis of common areas of creativity, the ambitions of the young artist, geography and other relevant factors.

After an initial group meeting for all artists – mentors and mentees – individual schedules will be drawn up, with mentor and mentee agreeing to meet regularly. The role of the mentor will be to support and advise on issues such as creative direction, selling work, exhibiting in Seychelles and overseas, further training and qualifications etc.

A registered mentor may well have more than one mentee but mentoring sessions will always be one -to -one.

Together mentor and mentee will set realistic targets for development. Arterial Network's resources will be available to support every aspect of the project, for example a visual artist might create a
limited edition of prints and sell them through our new online gallery (WHAT! A NEW ONLINE GALLERY?? keep reading below!), or might exhibit and sell original works in one of our two galleries.

A coordinator will oversee the work of all participants and report back to the funders. Artists and Mentors will be paid for their input to the project.

SO PLEASE! Let us know as soon as possible if :

  1. YOU are an established, exhibiting artist who would like to mentor one or more young artists. You will be paid for this work.
  2. YOU are a young artist who would like to benefit from having a mentor. YOU should have qualified (for example from SIAD, school, or an overseas college) during the last 5 years.
  3. YOU know of a young artist who would benefit from having a mentor.
Remember – in this context the word 'artist' covers all creative zones – music, drama, dance and literature.

WHAT NEXT?

Simply email us at arterialseychelles@gmail.com that you are interested to participate.

You will then be invited to an informal meeting with the project coordinator at the Eden Art Space, you'll fill in a simple form, hear about the benefits of the project and off we go!

ARTERIAL'S ONLINE GALLERY SET TO LAUNCH VERY SOON!

There's been a great deal of work leading up to the launch of our online gallery, which will be commissioned during March of this year.

Maven has constructed the site and it is an exceptionally good one. It will carry images of hundreds of limited edition prints made by artists in Seychelles, sell them globally and spread the word about the range and quality of visual imagery being created here.Clients will also be able to purchase original art.

We will be starting with around 20 artists but intend to expand the number later in the year. Each artist will, in collaboration with Arterial, select images from his or her portfolio suitable for transforming into limited edition giclee prints. The prints themselves can be created at Eden Art Space and we are currently applying to the Ministry of Culture for funds to acquire a large format flat bed scanner. This would mean that it will no longer be necessary for artists to have their works photographed prior to the creation of a print from those works.

HOW WILL IT ALL WORK?

Once the first selection of images has been made they will be uploaded onto the website by Maven, along with biographies of the artists, details of original works and some general information about the visual art scene in the Seychelles.

Clients will select their purchases and place them in a shopping cart. They can then pay by card or PayPal and the print/s will then be shipped to them. Artists will be paid on the 3rd working day of the following month ( our normal policy) for each image sold within that month, less the usual commission. Basically, apart from signing the print the artist does not have to do anything other than bank the cheque when works are sold!

As with all new sites we need your support to help us get the online gallery established. We need to boost our SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) – which simply means that when someone types in 'Seychelles Art' for example in a search engine, our website will come out near the top of the search results. So remember to share the link and mention the site in all your social media as much as possible! ANS Artists and members need your support as well as to promote Seychelles culture internationally.

What's on at the EDEN ART SPACE Gallery

GABRIELE SCHNITZENBAUMER AT THE EDEN ART SPACE GALLERY

'Gendankenflitter' By Gabriele Schnitzenbaumer.
We are extremely honoured to exhibit work by the celebrated German artist Gabriele Schnitzenbaumer at the Eden Art Space Gallery.

The show officially opened on Wednesday February 20th and will run until Friday March 15th.
This stunning exhibition will feature small and large paintings alongside small sculptures. It celebrates the 80th birthday of the artist, who has strong connections with the Seychelles and spends several months every year working on Mahe. Almost all of the work on show has been made in the Seychelles. The exhibition is documented in a fully illustrated catalogue that is available for purchase.

On the evening of March 1st at the Eden Art Space Gallery we screened a 45 minute documentary by Konrad Hirsch on the artist and her work. The evening was greatly enjoyed by all who attended.

FISHERMAN'S COVE GALLERY IS REVAMPED WITH A NEW GROUP EXHIBITION

Friday 8th February saw the launch of a new group exhibition at the ANS – Art Studio Gallery at Fisherman's Cove Hotel.

Prior to the event the new GM, Marc Wozniak, met with ANS and discussed how together we can raise the gallery's profile and promote the art of Seychelles. Seychellois and local residence are encouraged to come and view the newly revamped gallery that will host regularly changing shows and offer a diverse range of work at different prices scales that will appeal to both Seychellois visitors as well as tourists.

On the opening night Charles Dodo was 'the artist present', painting 'live' in the hotel's beautiful ocean-facing reception area. The hotel laid on a fabulous finger buffet and drinks, the attendance was good and we felt that the gallery, though modest in size, had been reasserted as a vibrant and meaningful exhibition space in the north of Mahe.

The present show will run – (with new work added as it sells) until April 10th. The second group show of the year will commence on Friday 19th April.

Let us know if you have work that you would like to exhibit and sell this gallery OR if you would like to create art on the evening of the opening.

All artists participating in the ongoing 'The Artist is Present' programme are paid for their time. The programme started during the NAC Arts Festival when Frances Chang Him and Isham Rath created original work at the Eden Art Space Gallery, and will continue at various venues in the future.

ART AT LE CHANTIER DENTAL PRACTICE

Tazio Tournier is a long-standing supporter of Arterial Network who also has close personal connections – his wife Ilaria was Arterial's first Administrator. So it's unsurprising that when he took over the Le Chantier practice he approached Arterial about the prospect of exhibiting art works at the surgery.

Tazio Tournier long standing supporter of Arterial Network Seychelles.
This is now a reality, with a number of original works on display which are for sale. Tazio takes no commission from sales, with Arterial just taking a small handling fee, so from an artist's perspective it's an attractive prospect.
If you are interested in exhibiting your work at Le Chantier please let us know HERE.

ARTISTS PREPARE FOR THE VENICE BIENNALE

George Camille and Daniel Dodin will be representing the Seychelles at this year's International Art Exhibition in Venice, Italy. This exposition, which is the most important visual art showcase in the world, will run from early May until late November. The artists will exhibit in the Palazzo Mora, with both electing to create installation work, George Camille's being based around the concept of 'fake news' which will see the exhibition space filled with a tsunami of cascading paper, embossed and marked to represent the tide of data and information that we receive every day.

Daniel Dodin will be exhibiting three short video films alongside painting and 3D materials.

The Commissioner is Galen Bresson, CEO of CINEA and the Curator is Martin Kennedy, Chairman of Arterial Network Seychelles.

We will be holding media conferences during March prior to commencing work on the creation of the Seychelles pavilion in late April. This is the third time that Seychelles has been present in Venice for the Biennale.

BIG DRAW 2019

This year will see Arterial working closely with the International School Seychelles alongside two other schools to respond to the 2019 theme of this international art event – PLAY.
Students at the ISS are already working on a giant snakes and ladders board, but the design and the message will offer a twist on the usual format, one that will be as educational as it will be unusual.

All will be revealed on Saturday 23rd March at the Eden Art Space. This whole day event will see the culmination of the students' planning and execution.

Once again we are grateful to the MCB for supporting this venture. The bank should be praised for being the only major Seychelles bank committed to regular support for the visual arts (as far as we know).

The BIG DRAW 2020 - Seychelles

For the past 4 years   Arterial Network Seychelles   have participated in the international   Big Draw   event, to promote drawing under a new theme each year  - this year the theme is “A Climate of Change”. Who really knows how the changing climate and all that goes with it is affecting our young people, they hear all negativity about it on the news and feel its effects in their daily lives but do they really understand it? And how does all the uncertainty make them feel? Are they afraid?  The mission of our  Big Draw  project was to get the children of Seychelles thinking – to get them researching and educating themselves about this “Climate of Change” we are currently living in. The theme encompasses all the changes in every way that the world is currently experiencing and we decided to focus on environmental climate change- a topic which is particularly poignant for our small island nation.   We had Five schools participating this year, Students from SIAD , Plaisance Secondary, I
