DANIEL DODIN
ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Some of this series
reflects the plight of displaced refugees – sadly a common and worldwide
concern.
Elsewhere I have
included and revealed a number of Indian characters due to my familiarity with
Indian society. I feel that Indian people number amongst the key activists in
the history of the Seychelles – they have always had a major role to play here.
Within a local
context I find the relatively recent phenomenon of the bottle collectors fascinating.
These young men have unique characters; they spend their days making long
journeys carrying big bags on their heads which are filled with empty plastic
bottles (which they sell). Looking at these characters a sense of courage and
desperation are simultaneously revealed.
Elsewhere in my
paintings we can discover clusters of ordinary bystanders, used as symbols for
social discrimination and gossip.
In terms of my
process I create atmospheric backgrounds with ink and acrylic, worked in
various stages to create layers, over which I apply patches of dots to
symbolise the repetition of the daily routine, the movement of refugees across
continents and the downward trajectory of local drug addicts (amongst other
concepts).
